ABOUT ELST
In 1997 Dr Tenzin Kyizom, a doctor of traditional Tibetan medicine, was invited to Cambridge on an intensive (3 month) English language course.
Dr Kyizom’s scholarship and time in Cambridge was, and has since been proved, a great success. Dr Kyizom is now making an important contribution to east west medical dialogue.
Dr Thupten Jinpa, a geshe (doctor) of Tibetan Buddhist religion and philosophy, was, in 1997, a research fellow at Girton College Cambridge completing a PhD. As both translator to HH the Dalai Lama, and an important member of the Tibetan community in exile in India, he quickly recognised the long term potential of such English Language Scholarships and the cultural broadening that even a relatively short time in Cambridge could offer.
Working with other members of the University and residents of Cambridge he formed ELST. ELST is now a charity registered in England.
ELST is a charity based in Cambridge, England. It aims to advance education by the provision of English language studies in particular, but not exclusively, for young professional and business people and for secular and religious scholars, from the refugee Tibetan community in exile in India and from related communities.
