NEWSLETTER EASTER 2004

“We very much appreciate the wonderful work that ELST is doing. Best wishes.”
Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, 24 February 2004

SCHOLARSHIPS IN CAMBRIDGE

Geshe Dorji Damdul had a productive Michaelmas Term 2003 as Visiting Fellow Commoner at Girton College, while working on his language studies at Studio Cambridge. Dorji la has returned to Dharamsala. He is doing translation work for His Holiness and is teaching at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics. Congratulations to Dr. Tsering Thakchoe Drungtso who has recently been awarded the next ELST scholarship. Advertisements for applications for the next scholarship will appear in the Tibetan Times early in 2005.

WORKSHOP 2003

ELST Workshop 2003, English Communication and Enterprise Skills, was held at Auroville last August/September. For a full report, pictures and article see workshop 2003. Some feedback :

  • “…to all my great teachers, thank you.”
  • “…. I got the job.”
  • “…such a wonderful time imprinted in my mind as everlasting green plants.”
  • “…Workshop 2003 started me thinking seriously about the strategic purpose and the social impact of enterprise for the first time.”

WORKSHOP 2005

The new volunteer team (VT) has started work in Cambridge. They are researching and planning Workshop 2005 “from the ground up.” They want your help:
  • Workshop theme and aims?
  • Finding and enabling participants?
  • More women participants?
  • The most suitable campus?

Working first by e-mail and then by visits to and interviews in Tibetan settlements in both north and south India, the VT will consult past and prospective workshop participants and many others in the Tibetan communities. If you have ideas, suggestions or questions, the VT wants to hear from you. Contact them at team@elstcam.org

FUNDRAISING (budget for projects in 2004 and 2005 is £26,620)

The VT has made a great start to 2004. Their project funding application to the Cambridge University Active Community Fund got top marking and ranking against a large number of competing projects. ELST was awarded £7000. This is a really good foundation for the requests the VT are now submitting to other donors, and to colleges and trusts

ELST is very grateful for further pledges, already received, amounting to about £5000. This leaves us a fundraising task of around £15,000.

  • One return flight to India £500.
  • “A Workshop Week” £112.
  • Visa £30.
  • Average travel cost reimbursed to Tibetan participants £23.
  • Oxford English Dictionary (published in India) for a Tibetan participant £5.

Your compassion helps to illuminate the peaceful example being given to the world by the Tibetans in India.
