NEWSLETTER SPRING 2006

Welcome to the web based ELST newsletter! On this page you'll find news about :-

ELST SCHOLAR 2006

Congratulations to Ms Chokey Dolma who has been selected as the ELST scholar 2006. Chokey Dolma is a teacher and writer with a specialist interest in Tibetan women's issues. Chokey Dolma is being very generously hosted by Girton College as a visiting fellow.

We look forward very much to welcoming Chokey Dolma here in April. ELST will be holding a formal welcome party on the 23rd of April at Wolfson Court, Clarkson Road, Cambridge. Keep this date free in your diaries - more details will follow in due course.

SUMMER VOLUNTEER PROJECTS

On 23rd October 2005, ELST volunteers who had completed projects in the long vacation of 2005 gave presentations about their projects at Kings College. The evening demonstrated the success of the summer scheme. Summaries of the volunteer reports can be found on this website.

Volunteers Alex Robson and Noel Forrest teach English to Tibetans in south India

Volunteers for summer 2006 have now been selected and will be working over the coming months to organise placements and prepare their teaching approaches.

FUNDRAISING

ELST has funding for its 2006 scholarship and volunteer programmes. However we need to raise £7000 this year to continue into 2007.

Cambridge companies and colleges and the Active Community Fund of the University of Cambridge Corporate Liaison Office have been generous supporters. However they all have many demands on their budgets.

Private individuals, Friends of ELST, have also been very generous. Please join them. Become a Friend of ELST. Meet the Tibetan scholars in Cambridge; learn about the peoples of the Himalayan region; come to our volunteer presentations and parties. Become an active volunteer.

There is a donation form on this website which can be used for a one off gift or to create a standing order, in either case ELST can recover tax paid on your gift.

Just £2.50 a month, the price of a cappuccino, builds up to £38.40 a year if tax can be recovered. One less coffee a week, £10 a month, builds up to £153.60 in a year. Perhaps you might even consider supporting a complete volunteer project, a team of two, with the equivalent of a few glasses of wine a week, £50 a month.

However much or little you can give, you will be welcome among the Friends of ELST.
